We help clients address their noise and vibration concerns with rail transit (subways, light rail, commuter rail), freight railroads, new residential, commercial and industrial developments. The Radial Acoustics consulting team has detailed knowledge of acoustics, noise, vibration, environmental regulations and technical specifications as applied to the rail transit industry; as well as general subject matter expertise in several fields of applied acoustics/mechanics such as elastic wave propagation in complex layered media (e.g. soils) and materials, structural acoustics  and underwater acoustics.

Radial Acoustics is a member firm of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants and is a certified SBE with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NAICS 541620).

Meet the team

Christopher N. Layman Jr., PhD, INCE Bd Cert
President

Chris is founder and president of Radial Acoustics, Inc. and has been working in the fields of acoustics, noise and vibration for over 16 years. His expertise is focused on the propagation of mechanical waves in complex media and structures, and how to manipulate sound and vibration using computational design of materials. His experience includes designing noise and vibration control systems for the rail transit industry and their specification, modeling of vibration propagation in layered soils and its interaction with subway tunnels/stations, environmental impact assessments for noise and vibration, and passive underwater acoustics. Chris is a Board Certified member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering and the Acoustical Society of America.

Prior to founding Radial Acoustics, Chris worked as a Principal Consultant for ATS Consulting where he led or served in key roles on many rail-transit noise and vibration projects of major significance. Chris’ previous experience includes tenure as a principal investigator at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Acoustics Division, and as a research fellow in underwater acoustics at the University of Hawaii, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
